Tewatia / Tevatia / Teotia / Tevathiya / Tevathi / Tevathiya – is clan of Jats, found in Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
The Tewatia clan derives its name from the ancient river Tewati (now dried up), along whose banks they once lived in the Kated region. Under the leadership of Jan Pal, the Tewatias founded the settlement of Januthar, which is now a tehsil headquarters in Deeg district. From Januthar, some Tewatias migrated and established villages such as Undra, Kumhan, and other settlements within the Kated tract. They are believed to be the 3 oldest among the 84 Jat clans of Braj, following Ponia and Thenua.
Four brothers from Januthar ventured northeast, where two of them founded the villages of Janauli and Alawalpur near Palwal. The other two crossed the Yamuna River and established Bhathuna. The founder of Bhathuna is remembered as Puranmal, and the Tewatias of this region revere Dagde Wale Baba, a significant figure in their folklore and spiritual history. Bhathuna served as the nucleus for many Tewatia villages in the surrounding area, which were subsequently established by descendants from this settlement.
From Januthar and Alawalpur, the Tewatias collectively established a total of 24 villages, famously divided into the “12 Bas of Janauli” and the “12 Bas of Alawalpur.” From Palwal, under the leadership of Gopal Singh, the Tewatias captured Sihi, a pivotal settlement from which all the Tewatia villages in the Faridabad region originated. The Tewatias from Sihi later went on to establish the Kingdom of Ballabgarh, a prominent Princely state in northern India.
In addition to their strongholds in Faridabad, the Tewatias established villages in various regions, including Aligarh district. Today, most Tewatia villages are concentrated in the districts of Palwal, Faridabad, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Deeg and Bharatpur. Smaller clusters of Tewatia settlements can also be found in GautamBuddh Nagar and Alwar districts.
Historically, the Tewatias of Bhathuna controlled 11 villages during the British period, though it is believed they held dominion over a larger number in earlier times. Their widespread settlements and significant contributions to the history and culture of the region underline their enduring legacy.
