Mahadji Sindhia had appointed Devi Ditta, a son of Diwan Nanun Mai of Patiala, detained in his camp as a hostage for the payment of tribute, in charge of Karnal district. On the death of Devi Ditta in 1794 and of his successor in 1795, Sardar Bhanga Singh Of Thanesar captured Karnal district.
