Sardar Gurdit Singh of Marake, was born in 1834 was the youngest son of Sandhu Jat Jagirdar Sardar Fateh Singh of Marake In 1852, His father had written to Sir John Lawrence recommending both his sons, for civil or military employment. Gurdit Singh later joined the Police Force as Adjutant in Rawalpindi, and attained the rank of
Inspector in 1862. Thereafter, in 1865, he joined the army in the 4th Sikh Infantry Regiment. Here he served for the next four years until his resignation at the request of his aged father, much to the disappointment of his superior officers who considered Sardar Gurdit Singh of Marake, as a honest and enterprising officer of the British
Government, who had served with such distinction, he was died in 1901.
