Sidhu – Brar

Sidhu – Brar :- The Sidhu , with its branch the Barar/ Brar, or Sidhu Brar , is on of the largest and most important of the Jat tribes in the Punjab and they are Chandravanshi Jats, from it have sprung the great Phulkian Families of Patiala, Nabha, Jind, Bhadaur, Malaudh, Kaithal, Badrukhan, Rampura, Gumti, Laudgharia, Sidhowal, Arnauli, Jhamba, Kot Duna, Dialpur, Chima and Ber , Patti Sandli, Thulla Sardul etc and many others like Attariwala, Bakshiwala, Rosa, Bargari, Bhatiwind , Killa Dharm Singh and many more and in Brar -Faridkot, Mehmuana, Burj Ladasinghwala, Sandhwan, Ransinghwala, Chak Sherewala etc, found in Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Pakistan. Brar Jat clan is found in Multan and Montgomery and in the latter District they are both Hindu and Muhammadan.

As Per H.A. Rose – The following is one of the Pedigree given by the Sidhus , in Amritsar :-

Shri Krishna – Parduman – Alazwadh – Chharchhad- Tannu – Salwahan – Bhasel – Dusar – Munser – Man – Kaseru – Jawanda – Barari – Mangali- Rai Ar – Sidhu, had issues with four sons , Dhar sometimes called Debi ( his descended families are Kaithal, Jhamba, Arnauli, Sidhowal )

, Bur (his son – Bhur – See Below) , Sur ( no descendants) and  Rupach (the youngest reside at Pir-ki-kot and Ratrya in the Firozpur District) – Bhur – Bir , had two sons , the eldest of whom Sidtilkara, did not marry, but became an ascetic, younger son was Sitrah or Satra , had issues with two sons Jetha and Lakumba ( ancestor of Attariwala), his son was Hari (give his name to Harike on the Satlej) and also founded the villages of Bhatta and Chima – Mahi or Maho ( s/o Jertha or Jetha) – Gala- Mehru – Hambir – Rao Brar ( Founder of Brar or Barard clan) , he as married had issues with five sons :-

1.Rao Dhul ( ancestor of Brar & Barad clan and Faridkot and  leading families of this clan like Mehumana, Ramsinghwala, Chak Sherewala etc.  )

2.Rao Paur ( ancestor of Sidhus and Phulkian families  )

3.Sawal

4.Peplu

5.Dodhru

6.Sairu

 

The ruling family of the State belongs to this clan. They own 3-5ths of the Kot Kapura and 2-5ths of the Faridkot Tahsil. Their history is that Ablu and Mahma, the sons of Barar (grandson of Sidhu) settled in this neighbourhood about 1706 A.D. They are known as Sidhu – Brar Aspdl after thoir ancestor, Aspdél. The descendants of Mahma live in six villages, Mahma Sawai, Mahma Sirhéri, Mahma Larja, Brij Mahma, Mahma Bhagwina and Mahma Balahar. The descendants of Ablu live in five villages, Alhu, Danewala, Ganga, Bhissiana and Kalai.

Another branch of the Brar family is descended from Wanju who settled in the Bhukhri ilaqa more then 200 years ago His village is now in ruins and is known as Theh Wanju. The family thence ‘scattered and is now settled in-nine villages, Bhukhri, Amargadh, Khialiwala, Jida, Goniana Kalan, Goniana Khurd, Bahbal Kalan, Bhukhara and Jandanwala.

Sangarh Singh, 10th in descent from Rao shri Barar, founded Panjgirain, and his descendants spread over ten other villages, Jiwanwala, Ghanayawala, Khara, Bahbal Kalan, Buhbal Khurd, Golawala, Ghadduwala, Maniwala, Misriwala, and Kaoni.

The Kapurik branch, to which the ruling family belongs, holds seven villages—Mahmuana, Rorikapura Mala, Khichran, Ramsinghwala, Bargéri and Dhoddi.

 

  • Religion :-

All the Brars in Punjab are Sikhs but in Rajasthan and Uttar Predesh , Madhya Pradesh they are Hindu ,Sidhus are found in a minority among Hindu & Muslim Jats. In the 1881 Census, Sidhus were counted at 155,332 and the Brars at 53,344. By the 1991 Census, the number of Sidhu Brars had reached up to three million.

According to B S DHillon, the population of Sidhu in Patiala district is 138,000. This is the largest clan and the Royal family of the former Patiala state belonged to this very clan.

In Amritsar district the Sidhu population is 26,739. This clan around Atari and Bhakna villages holds 14 villages.

 

Villages in Ludhiana district :-

In Ludhiana district the Sidhu population is 24,741. It is believed that this clan originally came from the Faridkot area of Punjab about 350 years ago and own a good many villages around the town of Jagraon.

Sidhu – The Sidhu are the largest Muslim Jat clan in the Punjab. According to the 1911 Census of India, one-third of the Sidhu were Muslim and rest were Sikh. They were found throughout central Punjab, stretching from Sargodha and Gujrat in the west to Karnal in the east. Lahore was and remains a stronghold of the tribe. In addition to Lahore, they are found in Kasur, Okara, Vehari, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Sargodha, Gujrat, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin and Narowal district. They are also found in Sanghar District of Sindh. According to 1911 census the Siddhu were the principal Muslim Jat clan in districs:
